  • I’m a little hurt, Wacom.

    Dear Wacom,

I am a loyal customer and have been since my first Intuos.  I now have a Cintiq, without which I would be lost.  So when you announced the Inkling back in August, I was over the moon.  A device that would turn my sketchbook drawings into layered bitmaps and vectors?  It sounded too good to be true.  All I had to do was wait until mid-September.

I bookmarked that enticing little Inkling page and checked back daily.  Picture the dude camping outside of an Apple store a few days before the new iPhone is released.  I’m that guy.  All of the days that could be construed as mid-September came and went.  “Mid-October,” the page said.  Ok, I can be patient, I can wait one more month.

Mid-October comes and I’m refreshing your page like one of those people who press the elevator button 18 times to get it to come faster.  “Mid-November,” your page says to me in a voice I read as somewhat condescending.  Ok, I can be patient…

So we are now approaching mid-November, and I do my daily neurotic Inkling check:

    Inkling Availability

The Inkling product will be introduced in the USA with limited availability in mid-November. Initial supplies of the product will be used to fulfill a portion of the backlog of orders at Amazon.com, currently Wacom’s selected reseller of the product in the United States. Our Wacom team are working hard to increase the availability of the product over time, and will post updates as information becomes available.  We deeply appreciate the patience of our customers as we introduce this exciting new product.

Waiiiiiiit just a minute.  Backlog?  You mean I could have pre-ordered this on Amazon?  You mean that if I had done so, I would have a chance of getting my Inkling mid-November?  Why, oh why, didn’t you mention that it could be pre-ordered on that page I’ve been staring at since August?  Why isn’t it still on Amazon so I can add myself to the queue?  Why didn’t you mention Amazon availability to your mailing list (that I’m on)?

I still love you, Wacom, and I will still (somewhat patiently) wait for the Inkling.  But I’m a little hurt.

Refreshing your page and now searching Amazon daily,
    Melissa

I have never, in my life, needed a product as much as this thing, which Wacom just announced.*  This trailer for it literally brought tears to my eye.  The Inkling (how great is that marketing name?  Good job, Wacom) can instantly turn your sketchbook drawings into bitmap or, even more excitingly, vector images (!!!) which can be exported to my two best friends, Photoshop and Illustrator!  Maybe this news doesn’t give you goosebumps, but it sure does for me.  The only catch is that I have to wait until mid-September, mid-October, mid-November to get my hot little hands on one.  I am counting the minutes, Wacom.  Counting. The. Minutes.

*Ok, this is an absolute lie.  Before this I lusted after, and got, my Wacom Intuos 2 followed by my baby, the Wacom Cintiq (pictured above).

The closest I feel to being at peace is when I paint.  Specifically oil painting.  I don’t know if it’s getting lost in the brush strokes and detail work, if it’s realizing my calling, or if it’s the turpentine fumes, but it’s like meditation for me.  I really only feel truly at peace with a brush in my hand and globs of paint on my palette.
